A combination of realization and memory trapped Hanako in her own mind, and her vision narrowed and dimmed, the concerned and confused voices around her fading into white noise. When she came to, she was not in the nurse's office, the classroom, or anywhere familiar. She was alone yet again, on some unfamiliar island. [attr="class","rcappleft2"] [attr="class","rcappleft3"] [attr="class","rcappleft4"] [attr="class","rcapplefttitle"]CHARACTER ABILITIES [attr="class","rcappleft51"] AVID READERHanako has spent much of her life reading, and is thus a fast and efficient reader, and is fairly skilled with the written word in general. Other than that, she's fairly good at billiards, decent at chess, and a surprisingly passionate karaoke singer. [/PTab={background-color:transparent;width:478px;height:612px;padding:0px!important;margin:-23px -3px -3px -3px;}] [PTab= [attr="class","rcapptab2"]BIO ][attr="class","rcappleft6"] [attr="class","rcappleft61"] In simple terms, Hanako's life has been touched by a single tragedy, which led to more tragedies. She had a fairly normal, if unexciting, upbringing, until, at the age of eight, a fire claimed her house, and the rest of her family. Hanako survived, thanks to the sacrifice of her mother, but was horribly scarred. Not just on the right side of her body, which will bear the ugly marks of the fire for her whole life, but also her mind, and her heart.[break][break] For much of her childhood, Hanako was raised in an orphanage, having no other real family, and thus becoming a ward of the state. With her heart still broken by loss, and her sense of self-worth shattered, the innocent cruelty of children drove Hanako into a corner. She learned to hide, to be afraid, and her social anxiety continually worsened. Still, she soldiered on, even as her crippling anxiety made interacting with others difficult, and resulted in her being one of the few orphans who went unadopted, even as she approached adulthood. She did try to make friends. Socially anxious or no, she still longs for the company of others. But these friendships always tended to end. Whether it was Hanako making things awkward with an emotional response, or simply realizing that even the people who cared about her couldn't see her as an equal. She was something weak, something fragile, something broken. She hated that.[break][break] REFUGE FOR THE BROKENTwo years ago, at the start of her time in high school, Hanako was enrolled in Yamaku Academy; a school tailored to cater for those with disabilities; in Hanako's case, her trauma and severe anxiety. Naturally, the atmosphere of the school is carefully regulated, and every student has some sore spots, so Hanako was, for the first time in her life, free from teasing and bullying. Her teachers and staff were also much more understanding of her anxiety, which would often lead her to be unable to finish classes, and need to leave early, or arrive late.[break][break] Fortunately, this is when things took a turn for the better. She soon made friends with her neighbour in the dorms, one Lily Satou. Through a combination of Lily's blindness, and her patient and kind nature, Hanako had, at long last, found someone she could truly confide and rely on. Perhaps too much, as she relied on Lily to help her negotiate many social situations, and to help her regulate her emotions. Still, the relationship has been nothing but positive, from Hanako's point of view; even as Lily, knowing their time at Yamaku would draw to a close, was trying to push Hanako to be more independent.[break][break] TIME PASSES, THINGS CHANGEIn her third and final year of high school, a transfer student named Hisao Nakai entered her class. With time, persistence, and Lily's help, the two eventually opened up to each other, little by little. The last day of her life in Yamaku came when they were assigned to do group work. With Hisao's presence, she felt confident enough to deal with their partners' gossipy nature, even as she was made increasingly uncomfortable by the well-intentioned probing. The breaking point came when Hisao was coerced into revealing where he and Lily had went the previous day; to the city, to buy a present for Hanako's upcoming birthday. This triggered a rush of emotions and memories potent enough to lock Hanako in her own mind, reducing her to a catatonic state. Her perception of the outside world dimmed to nothing, vaguely aware of Hisao's and her other classmates' concern and confusion, but unable to respond, or even retreat.[break][break] And thus another chapter ends, and another begins.
